Getting translations in Cluj

The following are extracts from people who translate into English:

“The contact is ensured by the technical equipment we possess, the communication instruments and channels: mobile phone, e-mail, written message. Instantness and dissolution of borders, language barriers are a part of the environment we work in. So we have all the means needed to establish a fruitful relationship with our customers. However, let’s not exclude the benefits of the ”face to face” meeting!”

Authorized Translations from and into English and German – Cluj

At Actalia you have a full offer of authorized and notarized translations, interpreting and website localization services, in any language combinations. Even in Basque, if you wish, at hats off standards! […] Localization also means to reproduce the brand, precisely, in any language.

https://actalia.ro/en/

I wonder how much it costs to translate the ‘English’ versions of these websites into English?

We’ve used other translators, and they turned out fine. But they were translating into Romanian, not away from it.  I would suggest hiring Romanian or Moldovan translators to translate into Romanian, and English, American or Australian translators to translate into English.

Night of the Museum in Cluj, 2025

Night of the Museum is coming to Cluj on Saturday, 17 May, 2025.  Are any museums boycotting this year? Some are not on the list.

Across Europe, museums are free, or discounted.  In Estonia, the museum card is on sale this week (visitors to Estonian museums are eligible for a few Euros discount and a free chocolate bar).

In Cluj, the top museums that we expect to be crowded are:

  • Steampunk
  • Mina immersive experience
  • The Salvador Dali exhibit.
  • The Transylvanian History museum
  • The Tailor’s Tower
  • The Fireman’s Tower
  • The Lapadarium

Last time Steampunk was free, the line seemed to be a mile long.

Where to find umbrellas in Cluj

Umbrellas are not as widely available in Cluj as they might be in Amsterdam, but you can still find them if you know where to look.

Supermarkets

Kauflaud. A nice variety of reasonably priced umbrellas. We saw some around 35 lei and up.

Carrefour (and Carrefour Express). Here you can find compact umbrellas by the checkout line. approximately the same prices as Kaufland.

Drugstores

DM

Museums

The Transylvania National History Museum (MNIT) has a lovely orange umbrella. You won’t get as much rain as Amsterdam, but you can still wear orange in the rain!

Adio Tate Brothers

We see it all over the Romanian news.  The Tate Brothers, the best known life coaches in Eastern Europe, are leaving Romania.

If what they are accused of is true, then they deserve harsh punishments.  If it is false, then perhaps they are owed an apology.  In any case, they do not say the false accusations are what caused them to leave, but it seems they claim it is taxes.

Europe does not have high business tax rates.  The highest in the world are in Africa.  There are other fees and bureaucratic requirements that can make it expensive for foreigners to do business in Romania.

First, will we miss the Tate Brothers?  We never met them.

We have closed our own Romanian business for different reasons.  It is difficult to run a business here if you are not Tates.  If you do not have a big flashy image in the IT sector or sports, not many people understand what you do.  In countries like Ireland or France, where they have a larger history of foreign artists, it might be easier.  Even Switzerland and Italy have a relatively recent history of bringing in foreign idea makers who are not in coaching, horeca or technology.

But we could possibly stay in Cluj.

Now, the lesser Tate, has made a political statement.  He allegedly supports Victor Ponta!

I guess Ponta, like the Tates, is a foreign citizen, after having accepted Serbian or Yugoslav citizenship. Ponta received that citizenship because he flooded some Romanian towns to save Belgrade, or something like that.

While I do not like to take sides, I personally do not see Ponta as a competent candidate. That said, I hope that if he is elected, he proves me wrong and leads the country well.

What makes us more anxious than any particular candidate, however, is cancelled elections. I would rather live under a president that I do not agree with than a president that the population does not trust. And with checks and balances, the senate should be able to check any stupid things that the president tries to do.

How would a Ponta presidency change Cluj? I am not sure, but I do not think it would be good. Cluj currently has some streets that are much cleaner than similarly sized cities in other parts of Europe. There is a lot to lose in terms of hygiene, services, and health. It also has slum neighbourhoods that can be improved.  There are areas that can do with improvement, but will Ponta help improve them?

Anyway, this election might prove positive change or negative change in Romania. What matters is not only who wins, but how the losers and their supporters react.

There are also the dynamics of NATO and the European Union, many of which are being misreported in foreign news outlets. Would a sovereigntist wish to leave either? Not as far as I could see. Most of the sovereigntists spoke of the rights of their citizens abroad and supported Romanian entry into Schengen and suggested incorporating Moldova to bring it into NATO.

Spring is returning to the Botanical Garden in Cluj

Did you hear the adverts for Gradina Botanica by the bus stop? It spoke of experiencing “Linisterea primarii”, the peace of spring.

Yesterday, the Botanical Garden surveyed its clients about what they liked and what could be improved. Do you find the staff to be friendly? Is the place clean? Is there a large enough variety of plants? Is it easy to find your way around? Are the descriptions adequate?

Simply asking these questions means the garden is on the road to self-improvement. But they also asked the most important question: What is your favourite part of the garden? They want to make sure that any improvements do not lose sight of the things that visitors go there for.

They also asked which groups would benefit from the garden, on a scale of one to five. Very young children? People with limited vision or mobility? School children? Adults? Families? Tourists from within Romania? Foreign tourists?

If you go to the Botanical Garden, you might notice a few things. You missed the Garden of Lights; a keen-eyed observer might find a remnant here or there, but the garden looks clean. And, the spring flowers are beginning to grow.

Little stems of spring flowers, they look like tulips, are growing near the entrance of the garden.

We don’t know what changes the survey will bring to the garden, but nature is already beginning to bloom there. And in traffic islands and green spaces throughout the city, one of which might be sponsored by your workplace.

If you want to wait for the flowers to bloom completely before you go, there is a French film festival to watch at Cinema Victoria.

Macedonian nightclub fire reminiscent of Collectiv fire

Monuments can stand for more than one thing. The monument on the main avenue in town, with the bell tower, was built to remember the Memorandists, protestors who wanted more state-funded institutions to use the Romanian language. But we often see flowers strewn along it in memory of the victims of the Colectiv fire.

Colectiv was a nightclub that shouldn’t have been allowed. The place was illegal, over occupancy, only one exit, flamable walls and without adequate fire preventive measures. When heavy metal was playing, something lit up, and people were trapped.

But most of the deaths happened afterwards.

A detailed documentary about the Colectiv fire and later tragedy can be seen on HBO. A government resigned, and technocrats took over. It could be said that USR was brought to the forefront; a lot of changes were promised. (But, the fire happened not because of a lack of regulation, but because the regulations in place were not enforced.)

Here is a shorter version of the story, made by France 24 five years ago.

A few years after this documentary, a more sentences were handed out.

The fire and unsafe building were not the end of the scandal. The hospitals were not yet up to standard, and national pride prevented patients from being transported to better hospitals in other countries. Some of the materials used to sanitise the hospital were diluted.

One of the chief investigators of the fire was a journalist who later felt censored by a foreign newspaper boss, in another story over a decade later.

Now, in North Macedonia, we see another nightclub fire in a dimly lit place. As Romania has improved much of its infrastructure, and improved inspections, Europe still has a long way to go. I can name recent buildings through Eastern and Western Europe that still have only one exit. Macedonia is not a member of the European Union, but EU countries are helping to evacuate victims. Macedonia did ask for help, so they do seem to have learnt something from the Colectiv scandal.

Romania was one of the first nine countries to offer assistance, immediately upon hearing the news of the tragedy. Romania is helping transport patients to Lithuania, and Luxembourg is helping bring patients to Hungary.

We are sad to hear of the scale of the tragedy, and hope everything that can be done is done to help the victims and prevent future tragedies like this in the future.

Keez vs Startco vs Solo

If you want to start a PFA or SRL, you might need the help of an outside service.  For SRLs, you need an accountant by law.

Now, a lot of people might use a lawyer to start a company.  Last time I contacted a lawyer that specialises in helping expats, they wanted 1000 euros just to start the company.  Yikes!  If you have that kind of money, fine, but you still need an office address, accountant, and all kinds of other things that go along with running a business (including taxes that are specific to your industry).

Why online services?

There are Limitations of all three “online company founding services.”  None of the three seem to help you to choose your area of expertise.  What NACE code area is a filmmaker?  A music instructor?  A dance studio?  If, like me, you do your own research on these anyway, you might find the answer more easily by just searching it up than by discussing it.

There also is allegedly, no room for negotiation in online founding services. As an expat, I like that. If there is a fixed price, I know that I am not being cheated. I like dealing with people, but I don’t like paying more than the other guy does for the same service.  If I keep doing that, I have to charge more than the other guy, if I want to stay alive.

That said, times have changed.  Despite the adverts by Keez and co, most accountants allow you to work completely online.  (the ones that let you walk into the office also have online options). Continue reading

Happy Martisoare

The first of May is celebrated throughout Europe, but slightly differently in each country. Most have similar-looking traditions, creating a false friends kind of misunderstanding, where similar symbols might have different meanings.

The white and red threads are one example. In some countries, the red thread may be the symbol for love, or even romantic love. In Romanian, however, the red thread stands for health. And the white thread, in Romania, stands for long life (it is like a grey hair.)

If you go to the ethnographic museum in Cluj (the one in the same building as the tourist information center by the old bus stop where you used to do squats, not the ethnographic park), you can see the largest collection of martisoare pins. Is it the largest collection in Europe?

In the video, the previous owner of the collection explains how she got it. In the old days, she was a female student among many male students. There were a lot of men giving pins, and few women to give them to. Then, when the communist period was over, other women heard that she had a collection, and began giving her their pins. About 80 percent of the pins in the collection are from the communist period. Production of the pins was different then. Now, you can still get some metallic pins, and some handmade ones, but not as many feel like they are built to last. (However, we did see some nice ones at the market in the main square and the smaller market at the Avram Iancu square.)

The vast majority of the pins are metal. To be a good martisoare pin, it should be “beautiful” and “not kitsch.”

What is Martisoare? It is the beginning of spring, when women are celebrated. It is a few days before International Women’s Day, and now many people give martisoare pins to men too. Most are kind of cheap.

Among the kinds of martisoare pins in the exhibit, you will find those that represent luck (horseshoes and four-leaf clovers), flowers, characters from fairy tales and children’s movies (personages de basme), animals, and much more.

There are some in glass, others in plastic, and a few ceramic pins.

Most of the text in the exhibit is in Romanian, including poems about Martisoare and a saying by Romanian poet George Cusbuc.

Here is a translation of the one by Vasile Alecsandri:

În fund, pe cer albastru, în zarea depărtată,

In the background, on the blue sky, in the far off horizon

La răsărit, sub soare, un negru punct s-arată!

At sunrise, beneath the sun, a black point is shown.

E cocostârcul tainic în lume călător,

And the shadowy crane, a traveller in this world

Al primăverii dulce iubit prevestitor.

The omen of sweet spring’s love.

El vine, se înalţă, în cercuri line zboară

He comes, rises, flying in a spiral

Şi, răpide ca gândul, la cuibu-i se coboară;

And as quickly as the thought, he swoops to his nest.

Iar copilaşii veseli, cu peptul dezgolit,

And the happy children, with their empty stomachs

Aleargă, sar în cale-i şi-i zic: „Bine-ai sosit!”

Run, jump in his path, and tell him, “Welcome, we are glad you arrived!”

În aer ciocârlia, pe casă rândunele,

IN the air, the hark, on the house swallows

Pe crengile pădurii un roi de păsărele

On the branches of the woods, a flock of birds

Cu-o lungă ciripire la soare se-ncălzesc

With a long chirp, they sun themselves warm

Şi pe deasupra bălţii nagâţii se-nvârtesc.

And on the puddles, the bugs spin.

Ah! iată primăvara cu sânu-i de verdeaţă!

Ah!  See the spring with its greenish bosom!

În lume-i veselie, amor, sperare, viaţă,

In its happy light happiness, love, hope, life

Şi cerul şi pământul preschimbă sărutări

And heaven and earth exchange kisses

Prin raze aurite şi vesele cântări!

Through golden rays and happy songs!

Is the roach problem under control?

Two years ago, Cluj heard many stories of eateries being closed because of insect manifestations.

Cluj 24 reported that many fast food shops have been closed after cockroaches and unsanitary conditions were found at fast food places at Iulius Mall.

The article seems to say that the fine is in the area of about a third of a billion lei.  Wow. But looking further, it looks more like a third of a million Lei.

Some other complaints were out-of-date food, drinks on the floor, and using a fridge meant for soft-drinks to store food or ingredients. Continue reading
