If you stood by the bus stops in Cluj Napoca recently, you might have noticed two things. One, is that despite the no smoking signs, tobacco is still on sale right by many bus stops. Two, is that it is hard to hear the adverts over the oncoming traffic.
One of the ads is inviting you to visit the Hungarian Days. Another invites you to go to Sora shopping centre, a safe place to shop.
Another talks about registering for a university course, in law, sports education, or economics. At first hearing, it sounds like they are saying UBB, but if you listen long enough for the traffic to die down, it is clearly not Universitatea Babes Bolyai but Universitate Boagdan Voda.
Of course, the program of study is in Romanian, not English or French. It can be on campus, online, or mixed.
I am sure I also heard something recently about studying through the French language, so maybe UBB also had an advertisement through the bus system.
But anyway, if you, or someone you know who is considering university, can speak Romanian, these courses sound useful. Many countries, including Romania, have a shortage of teachers, and need more healthy people. And the law is always useful to know.
I am not sure how useful an economics degree is, but the current president of the most powerful country on earth has one.
A law degree in Romania is four years. So, it seems longer than the other two options. It also pays more.
If you are considering one of these three degrees, these are worthy occupations. Think about why you want to study them before any interview, and practice questions you might have to answer with a potential employer or client.
How has your degree helped you become a better lawyer? Relatively easy, Cicero didn’t have a law degree, but these days most lawyer have one.
What about sports education? Well, recently deceased fitness influencers might not have one, but perhaps you want a more normal job. Perhaps instead of fame and charisma, you would like to study and earn actual knowledge that might be useful to ordinary people who are note genetically gifted and do not use steroids.
Or, perhaps you would like to be an electrician instead, like another advert that we heard part of at the bus stop. Unfortunately, the traffic didn’t let us hear who to call to be an electrician, but “curs calificat” plus the skill name is often a good search term for gaining useful skills.
So, are you considering being a fitness instructor? If “Just do it” isn’t enough motivation for you, it might not be enough for your students either. Maybe the degree will teach you what you need to know.
