Most languages have a word for the day before yesterday, and another for the day after tomorrow. English and French don’t, but Romanian does.
Now, some of you have asked me how to pronounce these words in such a way that you can pass for a native. So, here is a guide to how to pass for a Romanian native speaker.
- find someone who has never met a real Romanian, never heard one recorded (on tv, the movies, the radio, etc), and never been to Roumania or a Romanian neighbourhood.
- pretend to that special someone that you are a native speaker of Romanian.
Of course, as a native speaker, they will expect native speakers to know the days of the week and how to count to a thousand. But, if they ask you to say something that you don’t know how, you can always pretend to not understand their question. (And who has time to count to one thousand?)
Notice how the word for Easter (Paștele) changes to the genitive form when we speak of Easter Sunday (Duminică Paștelui). Do you notice any other changes?
