Lets do it Romania is holding an event. Clean up Romania, and part of that is to clean up Cluj.
Here, we will find the dirt on the floor, and clean it up.

This isn’t the first year of this event. In years past, volunteers were able to recycle a large amount of the garbage they found.
What will we find this year? From the looks of the floors in Cluj (and in other student towns, including those in Western Europe) the single most common piece of rubbish is cigarette butts. They are all over the place, and unfortunately cannot be recycled. In fact, I’ve read elsewhere that cigarette butts are “the single most common form of single use plastics.”
The worst place was, surprisingly, by a park bench in the Netherlands. Perhaps it hadn’t been cleaned for some time, but there were so many cigarette butts, it’s as if someone collected all the used cigs from the state of California for the past year, and dumped them in one place.
What other things will you find? We have seen people collect bottles at night, so they can get the refund. But it’s still a good idea to clean up after yourself. There are also people paid to clean some of the main parts of Cluj (main streets and parks) but their job is hard enough without people littering on purpose. It’s plenty of work to clean up after the crows that attack bin bags, we don’t need litter bugs.
Volunteer groups include international schools, Romanian schools, churches, clubs, and others. You can also volunteer on your own, or join someone else’s group. (It is easier in a group.) Contact your workplace, school, or community leaders to see if they have a group going.
